Remarkable heritage

Come and explore the historical buildings dotted throughout the towns and countryside, Roman towns, the Drôme, and more specifically Valence Romans, where there is so much to see: unique historical and architectural heritage sites, that have been awarded the French label "Pays d’Art et d’Histoire" (Land of Art and History).

Not-to-mention the local craftsmanship, locally-made products and expertise in the shoe industry which flourished across the region and really put Romans-sur-Isère firmly on the map.

Put your best foot forward!

Romans is known as the historical capital of the shoe, which is why they have created a trail through the town centre to discover 8 giant shoes, each one around 2-metres high.

The idea was to get inspiration from the iconic and remarkable shoes on display in the various collections at the Shoes Museum. You will find some creations from local manufacturers, as well as some famous shoemakers such as Jourdan, Clergerie, Kelian, Andrea Pfister, Roger Vivier, André Pérugia and Stéphane Couvé-Bonnaire. Most of them are high-heeled shoes, quite simply because they can be seen much better.

Specialised sculptors were entrusted with creating the shoes: there are 5 designs in Besayes (10 minutes from Romans) and 3 in Choisy-le-Roi. Each stage, from the initial design to manufacturing, was carefully monitored to make sure they resemble the original shoes as closely as possible.
