Jouvet Park is one of Valence's must-see attractions. Your steps will naturally lead you to this 7-hectare green oasis, located in the heart of the city, below the Champ de Mars esplanade and its Peynet Kiosk.
At the end of the 19th century, keen to preserve the view from Crussol hill, the municipality decided to create a public garden beneath the Champ de Mars, in the Robine district, featuring a network of canals and small gardens.
Théodore Jouvet, a wealthy patron, offered the city the money needed to purchase the land, and in January 1902, the competition programme was published. Fourteen projects were submitted to the town hall. Given the high cost of the project, the city asked Alphonse Clerc, a civil engineer, and Henry Martinet, a landscape architect, to prepare a less ambitious final design and organise its implementation, which was entrusted to the Nivet company of Limoges. The park was inaugurated on 13 August 1905 by Émile Loubet, and numerous additional features were added over the decades.
Since 2006, Jouvet Park has been designated a ‘Remarkable Garden’.
