Description

Blending figurative and abstract elements, Sêma LAO typically paints animals and portraits, capturing moods and faces with sincere, spontaneous expressions that the artist seeks to convey through a palette of saturated colors.

She focuses on transparency and movement, creating layering effects with spray paint.

The Work:
Sêma Lao drew inspiration from the historic river fishing tradition of Valence’s Basse Ville neighborhood to create, in her uniquely dynamic and colorful style, two works that depict, in two stages, the fishing of the great cormorant—a bird that has made its home on the banks of the Rhône near the Residence.
At the intersection of Victor Jacquet Street and Barthélémy Roux Street, a great cormorant is having lunch. A little further on, on the other side of the same building, it spreads its wings to dry them after its dive.
In fact, its plumage is permeable to water because, unlike most waterfowl, the great cormorant has a relatively inactive uropygial gland; it does not secrete enough oil to waterproof its feathers. This allows the feathers to absorb water during the dive, which facilitates the dive by making the cormorant heavier.

The Artist:
Sêma Lao is a self-taught painter born in 1987 of Chinese-German descent. She lives in Corrèze, after having lived and painted in Limoges for many years. Sêma Lao began painting at a very young age. Over the years, her journey has been marked by wonderful discoveries and, above all, encounters that have allowed her to fully express herself and develop her style. She experimented with various techniques before switching to spray paint in 2011. Since then, walls have become her favorite playground, and she has been taking on more and more projects and making new connections, both in France and abroad, working on both canvases and walls.
