By nature melancholic, Rémi Tournier paints stories and reflections through scenes of daily life, portraits, still lifes, and botanical compositions.
Silence, nostalgia, the poetry of everyday life, and questions about society run through his work like invisible threads.
He seeks a tension between melancholy and light, between silence and presence: what he himself calls “the sadly beautiful.”
The artwork:
In this neighborhood of Valence, there is a building that resembles a ship. It has a seaside architectural style. Seen from the sky, it looks like an ocean liner stranded in the middle of the city, desperately waiting for the sea.
Through this still life, I sought to convey this context by drawing a parallel with our personal stories. “Waiting for the Sea” speaks to that feeling of being caught up in a life that doesn’t feel like our own.
A journey where we try to adapt, to come to terms with our surroundings. But deep down, we sense that we’re missing out on our true lives. Sometimes the wait feels too long; we keep living in the present with resilience, but our minds are elsewhere. We’re waiting for the sea.
The artist:
Originally from the Lot region and now living in Merville, near Toulouse, Rémi Tournier emerged from the Toulouse graffiti scene, where he cut his teeth and began to learn the ropes starting in 2007. From 2012 to 2021, he was part of the duo SismikAzot, with whom he had the opportunity to paint as a pair throughout France and abroad for about ten years. Since 2021, he has been pursuing a more personal artistic journey, one that is more closely aligned with his own desires and sensibilities.
All year round daily.
