This long trail takes you on a pedestrian and historical adventure that extends far beyond the boundaries of Romans to the state forest of Peyrins.
This trail retraces part of the route taken by Charles IX and his mother, Catherine de Médicis, on their journey across the Kingdom between 1564 and 1566.
The trail follows a segment of the GR 422 (red and white markings linking Lyon to Valence), offering hikers an immersive experience at the heart of history, inviting them to walk in the footsteps of history, while enjoying the pleasures of hiking, nature and the magnificent landscapes that characterize our town.
Departure from the St Romain belvedere.
Follow the "Côte des Chapeliers" up "rue Bellevue". At the end of the road, turn left onto "Chemin de Bellevue". At the crossroads with "Allée des Ors", turn left towards the Isère. You're now on the "Belle Via" greenway.
Follow the route to the right, passing the railroad bridge. Continue until you reach the "Route de Marie".
Here, turn right and then left on "le Chemin de Chazelle", which takes you behind the Romans hospital.
Join the D532 Route de tain. Cross it by turning left and continue to the next roundabout.
Here, take the 1st small road on the right, parallel to the ring road. Turn right onto "le Chemin de Meilleux", then left onto "le Petit Chemin de la Croix de Meilleux".
Follow the road all the way up to meet the "Route de St Bardoux". Turn right onto this road, then left onto the "Route des Jabelins".
At the "patte d'oie", turn left, passing over the bypass, then left and straight on to "le Chemin de la Mère d'eau".
At the intersection with "la Route des Balmes", turn right, then immediately left onto "Route de Charbesse" (chemin du Petit Maupas).
At the next intersection, turn left, then left again at the small intersection.
At the next junction, turn right, continuing on "Route de Charbesse".
At the intersection with "Rue du Maupas", turn left, continuing on "Chemin de Clairbois" to return to a crossroads with "Route du Maupas".
Turn left, then 1st right. Cross "La Combe de la Banière", follow the signs to "la route du Bois Gaste" and follow it to the crossroads.
Here, turn slightly left into "le Chemin des Près", then right under the woods, following "les étangs de Chaleyre" to reach the "route du Maupas".
Turn right, then left on the "Petit Chemin". Cross "la Route des Balmes", go alongside the house and continue along the path to the end.
Cross over the bypass, turn left for 100 m, then right at the crossroads into "Chemin de Chatiou" and follow it to the end.
At the intersection with "Route de St Bardoux", turn left and continue along "Bruno Larat".
Pass the Tanneries Roux. Take the passage under the railroad line, then turn left onto "Rue Simone Abbat".
Follow "Avenue Duchesne", then right onto "Chemin de la Martinette". At the end, turn slightly left onto "Rue de la Martinette", then left onto "Marc Antoine Jullien de la Drôme".
Cross in front of the restaurant, then turn left up the boulevard onto the sidewalk.
Turn right into "Place Jacquemart". Admire the "Fontaine des Dauphins". Go left up the square, where you'll see the "Tour Jacquemart".
Go down "la Côte Jacquemart", admire the "Place de la Fontaine Couverte" (fountain) and continue on "rue Saraillerie".
Turn right into "rue Merlin", then right into "rue des Trois Carreaux".
At the end of the road on the right, you'll see the "Hôtel de Clérieu".
Cross opposite "la Place Maurice Faure". to reach the main entrance to the "Collégiale St Barnard".
Turn right up Rue Pêcherie. Admire the "Fontaine Puits du Cheval", continue for a few meters, then turn left into "Rue Fontessort".
Cross it to go up the "Côte des Chapeliers".
Turn right up the "St Romain" staircase to return to the starting point.
